Governance
The Ivory Coast is a multiparty presidential republic established by the Constitution of 3 November 1960. The President is both chief of state and head of government. He also appoints and heads a cabinet/council of ministers. The main Legislative branch is the unicameral National Assembly or Assemblee Nationale, which has 175 seats. Its members are elected by direct popular vote to serve five-year terms. The ruling Front Populaire Ivoirien (FPI), which won 96 seats in the elections held 2000, is now allied to a group of 14 independents, which has significantly boosted its strength in the 225-member parliament
