Getting There
Travel warning: Travellers are currently advised against all travel to Côte d’Ivoire due to clashes in the West of the country. Renewed fighting could lead to a backlash in Abidjan making the situation volatile and liable to change at short notice. Visitors can get further information from their local government travel advice department.

By Air: Various airlines operate in Côte d’Ivoire including Air Burkina, Air France, Egyptair, Kenya Airways, South African Airways and Trans African Airlines. Côte d’Ivoire has a shareholding in Air Afrique, although the future of this airline, due to financial difficulties, is still under negotiation. Visitors are advised to re-confirm returns flights 72 hours in advance. The flight Abidjan to London takes 6 hours and to New York takes 12 hours.

Abidjan (ABJ) (Félix Houphouët-Boigny) is 16km (10 miles) (website: www.aeria.ci) southeast of Abidjan. Visitors can take buses and taxis to the city. The ride will take about 25 minutes. Airport facilities include duty-free shop, restaurant, shops, banks/bureaux de change, post office and car hire (Avis). Yamoussoukro (ASK) (San Pedro) has been upgraded to international standard.

Departure tax: Visitors will have to pay a departure tax of CFAfr3000 for African destinations and CFAfr5000 for all other departures. However, prices differ according to airport flown from.

Be Sea: There are no regular passenger sailings but cargo liners provide limited accommodation for passengers travelling from Europe.

By Rail: There are two through-trains with sleeper and restaurant cars from Abidjan to Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) daily. The journey will take about 25 to 27 hours. Those intending to travel should be aware that the Burkina Faso rail network is under constant threat of closure because of financial difficulties so it is advised that visitors check with the appropriate authorities before finalising arrangements.

By Road: There are road links from Kumasi (Ghana) and from Burkina Faso, Guinea and Liberia and Mali. But the condition of the roads does not leave much to say. Borders close at night. Frequent bus services operate to Accra (Ghana) and Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). There is a service approximately once a week to Bamako (Mali) but the journey can be very long taking approximately 36 to 96 hours. Bush taxis also operate on these routes.
